Ellie Goulding's Explosive New Album
Ellie Goulding, a name
well known and loved. She’s had her fair share of success in her short
existence in the music industry. Before the release of her debut album ‘Lights’
Goulding won the BBC Sound of 2010 poll, which showcases the critics,
broadcasters and music industry insiders' top choices for rising stars and
artists for the coming year. She also won the Critics' Choice Award at the 2010
BRIT Awards, a prize that made her the second artist to win both in the same
year. Ellie has definitely lived up to the expectations of being a rising star
and one to watch for the upcoming year. After her success with ‘Lights’ which
sold 850,000 copies in the UK, Ellie glided back into the charts in 2012/13 with
her brand new album ‘Halcyon’.
Halcyon is a credible, enthralling record that is louder and darker than her debut. The single "Anything Could Happen" has the London Community Gospel Choir swooping around staccato piano and club beats. Ellie’s dazzling voice blends perfectly with electronics, swirling around itself on the tracks "Don't Say a Word” and "I Need Your Love," a bangin' collab with Scottish DJ Calvin Harris.
Ellie’s impressive high piercing vibrato, breathy tone and emotive delivery are what make this album so alluring and inspiring. Her seamless heart tugging vocals and lyrics suggests a warm and genuine feel to the album. My personal favourite ‘Explosions’ is about the memory of an ended relationship; she is reminiscing about a man she thought she loved. The cappella voices that sound very much like they were recorded on a record and the melancholic feel fits perfectly with the theme of the song.
Ellie describes the album as a “journey from dark to light. It’s personal to me, very personal.” There’s no doubt Ellie’s distinct and unique ear for electro-folk pop and her growing ambition to be a songwriter will help her dominate the charts and the music industry. She is definitely coming from the dark unknown days to the bright ‘lights’ of fame and fortune.
