Yamba - 25th April 2016
The weather was a little confused when we reached Yamba. We got a mixture of sun and rain which was a quite annoying as the beach in Yamba and it's outdoor pool beside the beach looked absolutely delightful for a little dip. We didn't spend too much in Yamba as we had to check into our campsite in Coffs Harbour by a certain time but from what we did see, Yamba has a lot to offer for a tiny little village at the mouth of the Clarence River. I loved how peaceful and isolated Yamba felt.
Coffs Harbour - 25th April 2016
I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Coffs Harbour. It was a place I didn't really know much about but considering it would have been almost 4 hours from Yamba to Port Macquarie we decided that we definitely needed to take a rest in Coffs.
There wasn't a whole pile of things to do, especially when the weather was a bit dreary. The centre of the town was dead and many other areas such as the marina were equally as quiet. There were a few places we had eventually decided on exploring but the weather and the atmosphere in the city didn't fill us with any enthusiasm. Coffs is surrounded by beautiful coastline and National Parks but the weather plays a big part here. We ended up spending one of the days in Coffs at the Big Banana Theme Park, playing mini golf. Overall we didn't see much in Coffs, hence why I've only one photo of our time there.
If your looking for a great campsite in Coffs Harbour I would recommend you check out Park Beach Caravan Park. Great facilities, helpful staff and a pretty cool pool (if you get the weather to use it, which we sadly didn't.)
Port Macquarie - 27th April
I fell in love with Port Macquarie.
It's such a bright and vibrant town with it's own quirky vibe. What other towns have their own KOALA HOSPITAL! Yes that's right, a koala hospital and they even do FREE tours. It's a great place for backpackers, you get to experience the Australian wildlife in a completely different environment and for free. I would highly recommend the tour, it runs at 3pm everyday.
We got to hear all about Koala's, where they came from, why they were in the hospital and we also got to see them being fed which was pretty damn cute!
The Koala Hospital is well worth a visit, it's something I would never have got the chance to do at home which is what makes Port Macquarie so unique and a must see.
During our time in Port Macquarie we went strawberry picking for the first time. I had always wanted to do this in Australia, so I was super excited when I came across Ricardo's Strawberry and Tomatoes Farm. Rated 7 out of 60 things to do in Port Macquarie by TripAdvisor. The reviews seemed good and the strawberries looked even better. Only a short 10 minute drive from Port Macquarie was this little gem of a place.
Port Macquarie is a beautiful place filled with wonderful little spots of beauty and character. The Breakwall is a alluring part of the town and reading the messages on the decorative stones is an emotional rollercoaster. Many people locally and across the world come and decorate a stone to celebrate friendships, special occasions and in some cases, their loved ones lives.
With an average population of only 76,000 Greater Port Macquarie still manages to deliver a certain amount of charm and character that the bigger towns and cities in NSW can not offer.
It's definitely one of my favourite and must see places that I have wrote about on my trip down the East Coast of Australia.
