Two days in dreamy Edinburgh..
As long as myself and Peter have been together we have always scrapped the traditional giving of presents on Christmas. Instead we agree that every year we will save our hard earned cash and book a little trip away somewhere in the New Year. This year we chose the city of Edinburgh in Scotland.
It's safe to say I fell absolutely head over heels for Edinburgh. Can we just start with how lovely the Scottish are? What a fabulous bunch of people, who have been so very welcoming and warm throughout our trip. From the lovely cheery bus driver at the airport to the most pleasant homeless people that fill the city's streets.
Everything about Edinburgh makes it a fantastic city break. The city is steeped in culture (quite literally, i.e: bring comfortable shoes). You also can take a break from the hills and cobbly streets that surround you by dropping into just one of many independent coffee shops that the city has to offer. The shopping is also fabulous, ranging from high-street brands to the best vintage stores I have ever seen. (W. Armstrong and Sons on Grassmarket being one of them)
Where we stayed
After much deliberation we ended up staying in a ten bedroom boutique hotel called The Rabble. It was perfectly situated on Fredrick Street. With only a few minutes walk from the Old and New Town is was a great location. Everything about the hotel was fabulous from the quirky and modern decor to the luxurious toiletries and amenities on offer such as a SMEG mini fridge packed with goodies, GHD straighteners and hair dryer as well as Rabble branded shampoo & conditioner, shower gel and even body lotion!

What we did
On our first full day in Edinburgh we made the obvious choice of visiting Edinburgh Castle. I was quite taken a back when we got to the ticket office to find that it was £18.00 per person for access to the castle. I thought it was quite expensive compared to other heritage sites I have visited. Luckily it definitely goes without saying that the views from the Castle are spectacular. You are are able to take in the great sights of Edinburgh at every angle possible, as well as becoming knowledgable on the historic background of this fantastic site. The entrance fee surely became a distant memory after taking in all the fabulous sights and museums that the castle has to offer. If you are considering visiting the Castle make sure you don't miss the one o'clock gun fire show.
We mostly spent our days trailing through the streets of the old town in awe of how picturesque this city is. Our favourite area was Victoria Street - which is where you will find the awesome Harry Potter shop. The street also is said to have inspired the creation of Diagon Valley in HP. I would also highly recommend visiting the Real Mary King's Close tourist attraction in the old town opposite St. Giles Cathedral. It was a fantastic experience and well worth the money.
Where we ate
You really are spoilt for choice in Edinburgh when it comes to food and drink. Fancy a Mexican? They've got an awesome burrito place called Bar Burrito. We also happened to pop into Bella Italia one morning for brekkie but it was pretty average.
Instead I would highly recommend breakfast at Tiger Lily on George Street, they offer thee best avo on toast. We also visited the Elephant House Cafe for coffee and cake (the place of inspiration for JK Rowling's earliest novels).

On our first proper night in Edinburgh we decided to try Jamie's Italian. We don't have any of these chains in Northern Ireland so it was a perfect time to try it out. We were not disappointed with Jamie's Italian. Great food, attentive staff and nice surroundings. Our second night in Edinburgh we decided to go for something we both love, STEAKS! A few minutes from our hotel room was Miller and Carter Steakhouse. Highly recommend for their fabulous service and food. I ended up not ordering steak at all and instead opted for a chicken dish. NO REGRETS.

Where we drank
We had been recommended a few places to try for drinks. The first one we tried was Juniper on Princes Street. It was reasonably priced and had amazing views of the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle. The Slug and Lettuce was another bar that we tried during our time in the city, it was definitely somewhere you would find a much younger crowd or a bunch of students. Not much seating on offer but if you want somewhere with good music and atmosphere then it might be for you.
During our time in any city we have visited we like to enjoy somewhere unusual or experience something new. We had been introduced to speak-easy bars from a cousin of Peter's. These are bars that try to disguise themselves as something else, for example Fortune Tellers, Private Detective or even sex shops. After much research we found one on Rose Street called Bryant and Mack. It was disguised as a Private Detective Agency. It is very small, therefore I would recommend booking ahead as it's table service only. I'll not give too much away but here's a little hint of what to look out for..
